MUMBAI: A 37-year-old widow from Andheri (West), who works as a domestic help, has filed a complaint with the West Cyber police alleging that a man posing as a London-based doctor befriended her online, promised to marry her and duped her into transferring Rs 18 lakh on the pretext of paying customs charges for expensive gifts. He allegedly sent the woman a Facebook friend request in December 2025. “Between February 11 and May 30, the complainant transferred Rs 18 lakh, which she had saved from her earnings and partly borrowed through a loan to pay customs duty for the gifts. A total of 28 fund transfers were made before she realised that she had been duped,” police said. She subsequently transferred amounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 1 lakh to different bank accounts provided by the callers. She was later asked to pay another Rs 3 lakh, but did not make the payment after becoming suspicious,” a West Cyber police officer said. The woman subsequently contacted the cybercrime helpline 1930 and approached the Cyber Police, seeking legal action against Jeny, the callers and the holders of the bank accounts used to receive the money. 26 gift fraud cases were registered in the city between January and August 2026, according to Mumbai Police data.

The following day, callers claiming to be Customs officials contacted her and said a parcel had arrived at Mumbai airport. “Jeny allegedly told her that the parcel contained a laptop, mobile phone, clothes, gold and medicines, and asked her to pay customs charges. Cyber police have registered an FIR against the man, who identified himself as Jack Jeny. After she accepted it, the two began chatting regularly and later moved their conversations to WhatsApp. They allegedly threatened police action if she failed to collect it. Four cases were solved and three people were arrested during the period.
