Chanda GMC's new hosp awaits opening: The wider industry impact

Chandrapur : The new campus of Karmaveer Marotrao Kannamwar Govt Medical College in Chandrapur is ready to usher in a major expansion of healthcare infrastructure in eastern Vidarbha, with its 500-bed, fully air-conditioned hospital equipped with modern facilities awaiting inauguration.

the inauguration remains on hold, even as around 20 faculty posts lie vacant While the building is ready and the water supply issue has been resolved. Construction of the new campus began in 2019, with the hospital initially scheduled for completion by 2023. The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the project timeline.

The date will be finalised once the situation permits,” dean Dr Milind Kamble told TOI. The new facility is expected to strengthen access to advanced medical treatment for patients from Chandrapur and neighbouring districts, many of whom travel to Nagpur for specialised healthcare. The delay in opening the campus has prolonged the wait for the institution to move out of its existing premises at the district general hospital and tuberculosis hospital. “The hospital building is ready. Since the model code of conduct is in force, the inauguration cannot be held at present. Six borewells have been dug on the premises, with the available water capacity estimated to meet requirements for around two-and-a-half years. The medical college has been using the facility of the district civil hospital since inception. With the infrastructure ready, filling the faculty vacancies and ensuring adequate staffing will be essential to making full use of the new hospital’s capacity.
