Mahatma Nagar to Motiwala College parallel road to Gangapur Road
Nashik: In a major infrastructure push ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the civic body has floated a Rs 65 crore tender to build a 4.5km parallel road to the city’s congested Gangapur Road, aiming to divert nearly 30% of the traffic from one of Nashik’s busiest corridors. The target is to complete the project by March 2027,” an NMC official said.
Civic officials said the road is expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve connectivity in western Nashik, an area that has witnessed rapid residential and commercial growth over the past decade. Officials said inadequate parking, roadside encroachments and the absence of service roads have compounded congestion on the stretch, making Gangapur Road one of Nashik’s most crowded routes. “We expect the tender process to be completed by mid-Oct. Once the work order is issued, construction can begin by the end of next month. The project involves widening the existing 9m-wide road to 15m and strengthening it to handle higher traffic volumes. Gangapur Road serves as a key link between central Nashik and several fast-growing neighbourhoods, educational institutions, hospitals, commercial centres and tourist destinations. Daily traffic snarls have become routine, particularly during peak hours. The corridor also provides access to attractions including several popular vineyards, Gangapur dam and the MTDC boating facility, leading to a sharp increase in traffic during weekends and holidays.
The tender submission deadline is Sept 28 and bids will be opened on Sept 29. The proposed road will connect Mahatma Nagar and Motiwala College and run along an existing canal-side stretch parallel to Gangapur Road. The project has received clearance from the Kumbh Mela Authority. Officials expect the process to be completed by mid-Oct. The new corridor is expected to improve east-west connectivity, cut travel time and provide an alternative route for commuters. Civic authorities also see it as a critical component of preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh, when lakhs of pilgrims are expected to visit the city.
