“There is no transparency,” a participant said. Appealing to political parties, civil society groups and grassroots organisations to join the mobilisation, the organisers said the campaign would focus on protecting voting rights and ensuring that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral rolls. Representatives from several organisations, including Janandolan Sangharsh Samiti, Maharashtra Stree Mukti Parishad, Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, Shoshit Jan Andolan, Kamgar Sanghatana Sanyukt Kruti Samiti, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, Nari Atyachar Virodhi Manch, Jansuraksha Kayda Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti and Bombay Catholic Sabha, participated. The groups alleged that the SIR exercise had gone beyond a routine revision of electoral rolls, raising concerns over the exclusion of genuine voters. Meeting participants claimed that the exercise posed a threat to democratic participation and accused Election Commission of failing to ensure a transparent and impartial process. The organisations also demanded criminal action against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and sought his immediate suspension, alleging lapses in the implementation of the SIR process. Pune: A coalition of civil society organisations and people’s movements across Maharashtra will hold protests on Wednesday demanding the scrapping of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of voters’ lists to their pre-revision status. The decision was taken at an online meeting convened by SIR Jagruti Abhiyan Maharashtra on Saturday.
