The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Nagpur: Gondia collector Mandar Patki has restricted groundwater extraction in 106 villages of the district that may face water scarcity in the coming months, and declared their public drinking water sources protected until June 30 next year. The order, issued on Oct 16, bars extraction from wells and tubewells until July 31 next year.

The order, under the Maharashtra Groundwater (Regulation for Drinking Water Purposes) Act, 2009, also bans digging of new borewells or tubewells for purposes other than drinking water within 500 metres of a public drinking water source. Sub-divisional officers and tahsildars have been authorised to take action against violators.

A scarcity report by the senior geologist of the Groundwater Surveys and Development Agency (GSDA), Gondia, says groundwater levels have fallen and that the 106 villages may face shortage in three spells, Oct to Dec, Jan to March and April to June next year.
