Facing soaring prices of sugar, milk and tea, vendors across: The wider industry impact

Now, the beverage that binds them all is at the centre of an inflation squeeze, with tea vendors saying a Rs 10 cup no longer covers the cost of making it. Kolhapur : Everyday conversations, business deals, friendships and family gossip are sealed over a cup of chai.

The Tea and Coffee Association, representing around 6,000 tea sellers, has recommended a benchmark price of Rs 15 per cup, arguing that the state’s favourite beverage is no longer financially viable at current rates. “Right now, the cost to make one cup of tea is around Rs 9.5, and the selling price is around Rs 10 per cup. We have suggested a sustainable selling price or benchmark price of Rs 15 per cup of tea,” said association president Pramod Wakode. For daily tea drinkers, even a Rs 5 increase per cup could translate into a noticeable monthly expense, especially for families, workers and office-goers who consume multiple cups a day.

Facing soaring prices of sugar, milk and tea, vendors across Maharashtra are preparing to pass the heat on to customers. Association members say many vendors are currently selling tea at a loss. It is more in the metros and less in rural areas. The proposed increase comes at a time when rising food inflation has already put pressure on household budgets.
