The 8.9km elevated corridor, an engineering marvel built through some of the city’s most congested and complex stretches, is designed to cut travel time between Indora and Dighori to around 15 minutes by allowing traffic to bypass busy junctions without encountering traffic signals. Another technological highlight is the nearly 2.2km stretch constructed using Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC), a high-strength material that allows longer spans between supports, reducing the number of pillars needed in space-constrained locations. Named after RSS founder Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the corridor took three years to complete. But building a nearly 9km elevated road through an already crowded city involved far more than constructing concrete decks above existing roads. At several points, engineers had to redesign elevations, alter support structures and find ways around existing infrastructure that could not be disturbed. One of the most demanding stretches was the crossing over Nag river. With an existing bridge carrying traffic below, placing a conventional pillar in the middle was not an option. Engineers instead modified the elevation and devised a support arrangement that could carry the structure without obstructing the existing bridge. Multiple pillars were installed along the sides, supplemented by vertical support arrangements, allowing the elevated deck to cross the bridge without a central pillar. A similar challenge arose at Dighori, where the new elevated corridor had to pass over an existing flyover. Engineers worked out a compatible elevation and structural configuration to allow the new corridor to cross above the old structure while maintaining traffic movement on the existing road network. The corridor also crosses two busy railway lines at Pachpaoli and passes below the Metro viaduct at Agrasen Square. Engineers used an open-web girder and a steel girder to enable the elevated corridor to cross the busy railway lines. The decades-old Pachpaoli flyover was demolished and reconstructed to integrate it with the new elevated alignment. At Ashok Chowk, one of the city’s most complicated urban junctions, the corridor has been integrated with a rotary, allowing local traffic to continue moving at ground level while through traffic uses the elevated route. Those present at the inauguration included guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, MLAs Pravin Datke, Krishna Khopde and Mohan Mate, MLC Sanjay Bhende, mayor Neeta Thakre and others. Multiple infrastructure levels: Engineers had to navigate roads, river, railway lines, Metro and existing flyovers along the alignment. Nag river: Changed the elevation and used side and vertical supports to avoid a pillar in the middle of the existing bridge. Dighori Flyover: New corridor had to rise above the existing flyover while maintaining clearance and traffic movement. Railway lines: Crosses two busy railway lines at Pachpaoli without disrupting operations. Pachpaoli Flyover: Existing flyover was demolished and rebuilt to integrate with the new corridor. Metro viaduct: New elevated road passes below the Metro line at Agrasen Square. Ashok Chowk: Elevated corridor required a new rotary arrangement at the busy junction. Download the TOI App.
