CCTV footage captured the alleged assault, showing 45-year-old Sham Coutinho entering the premises carrying a bag and an iron rod. The CCTV footage bears the date and time stamp February 28, 2022, at 10.57am. Four years later, on September 28, Gabriel, then 84, allegedly died by suicide after jumping in front of a moving local train at Naigaon railway station. In 2021, Gabriel transferred ownership of his house to his two daughters and barred Sham from entering the premises. In March 2022, Vasai police registered a case against Sham for alleged unlawful entry after he allegedly entered the house and damaged household articles. On September 28, shortly before taking the extreme step, Gabriel handed Rupa a bag containing his suicide note.

Gabriel named his son Sham in a suicide note and stated that he had been subjected to physical and mental harassment by Sham and his associate, Sagar, according to police. Gabriel subsequently rented a house nearby, but Sham allegedly continued to harass him, deny him food, prevent him from leaving the house and assault him, according to the complaint. VASAI: An iron rod in his hand, a man entered his elderly father’s home in Vasai near Mumbai through the back entrance and moved towards a door, allegedly attempting to break it open. Frightened by the commotion, the father rushed to secure the door, but the son allegedly continued trying to force his way inside. The footage shows Gabriel trying to shut the doors and keep his son out, even as Sham allegedly continued his attempt to break in. The disturbing visuals later show Sham allegedly pushing the iron rod through a window and striking Gabriel, even as the elderly man tried to shield himself and move away. Gabriel appeared to sustain an injury in the assault. The CCTV footage has surfaced amid allegations that Gabriel had been subjected to prolonged physical and mental harassment by his son. Bhayandar Railway Police registered a case of abetment of suicide against Sham and Sagar following a complaint filed by Gabriel’s daughter, Rupa Chirayat. In her complaint, Rupa alleged that Sham had assaulted, abused and mentally harassed their father over petty issues for years. Rupa’s complaint further alleged that Sham later occupied the house with the help of others, prompting her to take her parents and aunt to their native place. A video purportedly showing Sham pushing an iron rod through a window and assaulting his father, who had locked himself inside the house, had also circulated on social media.
