Kolhapur : Gokul dairy has increased the selling price of full cream buffalo milk by Rs 2 per litre.
The revised price for the full cream milk will be Rs 76 per litre in Mumbai and Pune, where around 13 lakh litres of Gokul’s milk are sold daily. In Kolhapur, the revised price of full cream milk will be Rs 70 per litre, which was earlier Rs 68 per litre. “We had increased the purchase price of buffalo milk by Rs 1 per litre twice-in Sept and Oct last year but did not hike the selling price. Now also we have increased Rs 2 per litre in purchase price. The effective Rs 4 per litre increase in the purchase price is mainly aimed at helping farmers cope with the increased cost of rearing their milch animals, the increase in selling price is justifiable,” said Yogesh Godbole, managing director of Gokul dairy.
The two cities are the major markets for one of the largest dairies in the state. The revised price will come into force from Saturday.
Gokul dairy will pay Rs 53.50 per litre to farmers supplying buffalo milk with 6 fat percentage and 9 percentage of solids not fat (SNF). For cow milk, the purchase price has been increased to 36 per litre from 34 per litre for 3.5 percentage fat and 8.5 percentage of SNF. Given the current increase in purchase prices, the dairy will have to pay Rs 7.5 crore in addition to farmers supplying the milk.
The dairy officials claimed that another reason for increasing selling price is that other competitors in the market, mainly private dairies, have increased their selling prices due to a shortage of milk.
