Nashik : Over 5,000 tribal youth and students from across Maharashtra are set to launch a foot march from Nashik to Mumbai on Sept 28 to protest against poor infrastructure in tribal hostels and demand political accountability following the deaths of three tribal students from snakebites in Gadchiroli district. The demonstrators, who have been conducting a sit-in protest at the Eidgah Ground in Nashik for the past month, estimate reaching Mumbai by Oct 5 after covering a daily walking distance of 25 to 30 km over six to seven days. The march is now scheduled to commence immediately following Anant Chaturdashi on Sept 28. However, a ‘long march’ will leave Nashik for Mumbai on Sept 28.

However, we are firm on our demands and resolved to undertake the foot march,” said Prashant Gavande, a member of the Sakal Adivasi Vidyarthi Andolan Kruti Samiti. “We are demanding the resignation of minister Ashok Uikey, as he is responsible for the fatal snakebite incidents involving three students residing in a tribal hostel in the Gadchiroli district. Minister Uikey personally visited us at the protest venue in Nashik and invited us for formal talks in Mumbai.
