Around 30 committee members, from senior citizens to youngsters, had travelled to Shegaon on the night of Sept 28 to bring the Durga idol for the annual celebrations. The locality struggled to come to terms with the scale of the tragedy as seven families had lost their loved ones.

The victims belonged to Yuva Navdurga Puja Festival Committee. The accident occurred in the early hours of Friday when they were returning to Wardha with the idol. After news of the crash spread, family members rushed towards the accident site and hospitals. For several families, the hours that followed were spent moving between hospitals, police officials and other authorities, waiting to know the fate of their loved ones. By Friday night, last rites had been performed for at least five of the deceased, while formalities for the remaining two were still underway. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the accident and described it as extremely unfortunate.
Instead, on Friday, eerie silence prevailed as the festive decorations were taken down to erect temporary pandals in front of homes for the funeral of victims of the Samruddhi Expressway accident.
