Jalna district collector Ashima Mittal said the initiative is not limited to collecting information about farmers’ problems but is also an initial step towards ensuring better coordination. Such interaction helps officials understand the situation on the field, while farmers get an opportunity to know about the schemes and measures being implemented by the administration,” Mittal said. She said the district administration had planned a series of measures as part of its contingency plan to tackle the drought situation this year. The administration will use information gathered through village-level meetings while implementing these measures and responding to emerging requirements, she said. The administration said the exercise was aimed at enabling officials to identify issues that could be addressed at the local level and those requiring intervention at the district or higher levels. The information collected will be examined and necessary administrative action and remedial measures will be taken, officials said.

The meetings were conducted as part of the administration’s efforts to establish direct communication with farmers at the village level and assess the on-ground situation arising from inadequate rainfall. Officials from various departments participated in meetings and interacted directly with farmers to understand their immediate concerns, local requirements and pending issues. “The farmer dialogue meetings are an important initial step in ensuring familiarisation and direct communication between our ground staff and farmers of the district. The meetings were organised in the past few days across all talukas through coordinated efforts of tehsildars, taluka agriculture officers and block development officers. Farmers were informed about crop-loss compensation and other relief measures available to them in view of the drought-like situation. Officials also provided information on various govt welfare schemes and measures related to agriculture and rural areas. Availability of fodder, an important concern in a drought-like situation, was also discussed with farmers during the meetings. Apart from disseminating information, officials sought details of problems being faced by farmers, including local requirements and issues pending with various departments. The large-scale outreach also enabled the district administration to obtain a village-wise assessment of drought-like conditions and demands being raised by farmers.
