Union consumer affairs secretary Nidhi Khare, in a post on X, said Kanda Express would bring nearly 800 tonnes of onions to Delhi, where they will be sold at a subsidised rate of Rs 35 per kg through Nafed, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar outlets. The two central agencies have together procured around 1.15 lakh tonnes of onions for the buffer stock. In Nashik district, India’s onion heartland, wholesale prices softened soon after the buffer stock release was announced, with rates slipping by Rs 150-250 per quintal across key agricultural produce market committees (APMCs). At Lasalgaon APMC, Asia’s largest onion trading hub, the average wholesale price dropped by Rs 250 per quintal to Rs 4,000 on Tuesday from Rs 4,250 a day earlier. The market recorded arrivals of about 12,000 quintals, with prices ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,552 per quintal. At Pimpalgaon APMC, another major trading centre, average prices eased by Rs 100 per quintal to Rs 4,300 on Tuesday, compared with Rs 4,400 on Monday. Earlier reporting noted: Data maintained by the ministry shows the all-India average retail price of onion rose 59 per cent year-on-year to ₹ 43.53/kg on August 24, from ₹ 27.37/kg a year ago. The average wholesale price was up 68 per cent at ₹ 35.58/kg, against ₹ 21.23/kg in the year-ago period. Earlier reporting noted: In 2024-25, 14 railway rakes carrying nearly 12,000 tonnes of onion buffer stock were dispatched to five cities. In 2025-26, this has expanded to 86 rakes carrying about 88,000 tonnes of onions to 16 major cities across the country.

The train, initially scheduled to depart on Monday, was delayed due to late loading of the kitchen staple. Nashik : As retail onion prices jump to Rs 50-65 per kg in several cities, Centre is set to release buffer stocks via specially designated “Kanda Express” (onion train), transporting about 800 tonnes of onions from Nashik to Delhi on Wednesday. She said the initiative would soon be expanded to Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai and Guwahati, signalling a broader push to tame the rising prices. Traders and market observers said the arrival of buffer-stock onions could provide much-needed relief in key consumption centres, boosting supplies and helping prevent another sharp spike in retail prices.

A second train with a similar load is expected to depart for Guwahati later this week. Centre’s market intervention appears to have delivered an immediate signal to traders.
