On Thursday, 1.85 lakh crates were traded at the market, with the average wholesale price recorded at Rs 411 per crate. Each crate contains 20 kg of tomatoes. Arrivals at the market reached a season-high of 2.15 lakh crates on Tuesday, while daily arrivals have been hovering between 1.75 lakh and 2 lakh crates over the past few days. About two weeks ago, the average wholesale price had fallen to Rs 291 per crate. At Lasalgaon APMC, another major agricultural market in the district, around 20,000 crates of tomatoes were auctioned on Thursday, with the average wholesale price recorded at Rs 401 per crate.
Market officials attributed the price stability to rising demand from several states and overseas destinations, which has helped absorb the increased supplies during the peak harvest season. The improvement came after a period of weak demand that had pulled down the price. Traders corroborated that the combination of robust domestic consumption and growing export demand has ensured that growers continued to receive remunerative prices despite record arrivals in the market. They expected that price to remain stable as long as demand continued to match the supply.
