Protests Erupt Following IIT-Bombay Student’s Death

The death of a second-year student at IIT-Bombay has sparked significant protests on the Powai campus. Students are demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The student was found unresponsive in his hostel room after his roommates alerted authorities due to a lack of communication. The police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination. No suicide note was discovered at the scene.

In a statement, the institute expressed its commitment to supporting the student’s friends, classmates, and faculty members affected by this tragic event. Earlier discussions between the student, an instructor, and the Head of the Department had taken place, where he was assured that any preceding incidents would not negatively impact his academic career.

The student’s family has alleged that casteism and institutional pressure contributed to their son’s death, leading them to call for a thorough inquiry. The Powai police have initiated a case of abetment of suicide against multiple individuals named by the family, who are seeking accountability for what they describe as ‘institutional torture.’
