Mumbai: A Mumbai court rejected the Crime Intelligence Unit’s plea seeking, for a second time, custody of Mohammed Shafiq Lone, arrested from Mahabaleshwar for suspected links with a terror organisation last month.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate DS Khedekar said the grounds cited by investigators had already been examined during his earlier custodial interrogation and did not justify further custody. Lone’s lawyer, Aftab Qureshi, opposed the application, contending that the grounds cited by the police had already been investigated. Lone was arrested last month from Mahabaleshwar for allegedly threatening govt contractor Imtiaz Khatri after the latter publicly supported the demolition of unauthorised slums and a mosque in Garib Nagar, Bandra East. During the investigation, police allegedly found suspicious communications between Lone and Pakistan-based mobile numbers. The police had sought his custody to probe these links.
