Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed Maharashtra govt to clarify its stand within a week on filling hundreds of vacant Class IV posts in govt medical colleges and hospitals across Vidarbha, citing the growing pressure on support services as patient numbers rise.
The court initiated a suo motu PIL after taking note of a report that GMCH here had stretchers and wheelchairs but lacked sufficient attendants to operate them and assist in moving patients to wards. Isha Thakare assisted the court as amicus curiae, while additional govt pleader Deepak Thakare represented the state govt.
A division bench comprising Justices Anil Kilor and Rajnish Vyas had earlier sought district-wise details of patient numbers and available support staff at govt hospitals across Vidarbha’s 11 districts. Nagpur GMCH has 194 vacant Class IV posts, while Indira Gandhi GMCH (Mayo) has 51. The corresponding figures are 198 at Yavatmal and 122 at Akola. The affidavit also showed a rise in the outpatient department (OPD) footfall at Nagpur Medical, from 5.57 lakh in 2023 to over 6.26 lakh in 2025.

Dr Raj Gajbhiye, joint director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research, submitted an affidavit detailing the vacancies. Mayo, too, recorded a substantial increase in patient numbers. The shortage of support staff has raised concerns about hospitals’ ability to manage patient movement and other essential assistance despite the availability of basic equipment.
