Nagpur: Lack of designated parking at private hospitals has emerged as a major traffic and civic concern in Nagpur, with a municipal inspection finding 57 hospitals without parking facilities.
Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has so far inspected 310 of the 659 hospitals in the city, covering around 47% of the total facilities. In Laxmi Nagar zone, civic teams found 18 hospitals without parking facilities. In Dharampeth zone, which includes major healthcare clusters such as Ramdaspeth and Dhantoli, as many as 29 hospitals were found without parking facilities.
In several cases, parking spaces were allegedly encroached upon or put to other uses, forcing patients and relatives to park vehicles on roads and adding to traffic congestion around hospitals. In most cases, parking spaces were reportedly encroached upon, leaving visitors with little option but to park on adjoining roads. The concentration of hospitals and lack of designated parking have contributed to traffic snarls in these areas. The issue is also pending before Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court. Similar violations were found in other zones. Two hospitals each in Hanuman Nagar and Nehru Nagar were found to have their parking areas allegedly being misused.

The civic body’s IT officer Swapnil Lokhande also developed a portal providing information on hospital beds and their availability. Following the discussion, municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar said all hospitals would be inspected. In Satranjipura zone, five hospitals were found without parking facilities. These include Shaad Hospital Complex & Research Centre near Itwari Railway Station, where designated parking was found missing. At Sparsh Hospital in Zingabai Takli, the inspection found no designated parking for the multi-storeyed hospital. Patients and visitors are consequently forced to park on the road, further narrowing the existing road width and affecting traffic movement. NMC has now decided to conduct a comprehensive audit of all private hospitals to check sanctioned and actual bed strength, use of parking spaces and other regulatory violations. The civic administration has directed special teams to complete the exercise within a month and initiate action against erring hospitals. The need for such an exercise was also discussed briefly during the NMC general body meeting last month, where corporators raised concerns over hospitals allegedly operating beyond sanctioned bed capacity and using parking areas for other purposes.
