The emails also threatened singer singer Diljit Dosanjh’s Nov 27 concert in Mumbai
Monday’s threats follow a similar email received by city mayor Ritu Tawde’s office on Oct 23 warning of attacks at her office, the American School in BKC, the Juhu home of actor Amitabh Bachchan and actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert scheduled to be held later this month. They were received at intervals of 30 minutes. Nanded, Beed, Satara and Parbhani courts also reported receiving the email.
The sender allegedly threatened to attack Metro stations on “9.11” and to target a Nov 27 programme by singer Diljit Dosanjh at Mahalaxmi Racecourse by “concealing an IED inside an iPhone”. In the afternoon, the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS), along with sniffer dogs, conducted extensive checks of multiple courts, but nothing suspicious was found, said a police officer. Mumbai police said they were in the process of registering an FIR against the unidentified email sender/s, and the crime branch and cyber cell had been assigned to trace the source. “The two buildings housing Thane district court have been evacuated, and a thorough checking operation has been carried out,” said Balasaheb Patil, DCP, Zone 1. In Palghar, police sources said that the emails were sent to courts statewide from the same email ID.
In Mumbai, Monday’s threats warned of explosions in Mazgaon, Dindoshi and Esplanade courts. Similar emails were received by district courts in Thane, Hingoli and Beed, prompting swift evacuation. Extensive searches continued till late evening at Shivajinagar court complex in Pune.
Mumbai: Authorities sounded a high alert across Maharashtra on Monday after a series of emails threatened bomb attacks on courthouses in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Nagpur, Beed, Hingol, and other cities.
