Nashik : An elderly retired woman was cheated of Rs15 lakh by online fraudsters between Aug 11 and Aug 27. Based on the victim’s complaint, the Upnagar police have registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complainant, who lives alone, received a phone call from an unidentified person on Aug 11, according to the police. The caller convinced her that someone had obtained a SIM card in her name and used it to open a bank account in Delhi. After transferring the funds as directed, the woman realised she had been duped and subsequently lodged a complaint with the Upnagar police station. Further investigation in the matter is underway.

Posing as officials from an investigation agency, the fraudsters, who made voice and video calls to the woman, instructed her to liquidate her fixed deposits, mortgage her gold jewellery, and transfer Rs15 lakh to a specified bank account. They assured her that the amount would be refunded once the investigation was complete.
