Nashik : A groundwater contamination crisis at Dattanagar, on Nashik’s outskirts, has triggered serious health concerns after civic authorities found 45 borewells yielding yellowish water and identified 208 residents suffering from skin ailments. A survey by Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), launched after complaints of discoloured groundwater and health problems, covered 8,887 households and 34,399 residents. Of the 229 borewells mapped in the area, 45 were found to be discharging yellowish contaminated water. Groundwater samples collected by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) detected chromium concentrations of 45 ppm in two samples, nearly 900 times higher than the permissible drinking water limit of 0.05 ppm. In response, MPCB has issued closure notices to 17 electroplating units and ordered disconnection of their electricity and water supply.

The contamination surfaced after residents reported yellowish water from borewells and complained of skin problems. The civic body has already started supplying safe drinking water through tankers in the affected localities,” a senior NMC official said. The findings come amid alarming evidence of chemical contamination. “Residents have been advised not to use water from such borewells. Preliminary investigations have pointed to suspected industrial pollution from the adjoining Ambad industrial estate. Officials suspect untreated industrial effluents may have been discharged into soak pits, allowing hazardous chemicals to seep into the groundwater. MIDC and MSEDCL have since cut power and water connections to the units concerned. MPCB has also initiated action against five more industrial units, while investigations into other establishments are continuing. NMC and MPCB are now racing to contain the fallout by supplying safe drinking water, monitoring residents’ health and tracing the source of contamination. Download the TOI App.
