NMC’s garbage collection van
Nashik : Garbage generation across Nashik city has increased amid Diwali festivities, prompting the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) to deploy 12 additional garbage collection vans to handle the higher volume of waste. Since Sunday, daily garbage collection across the city has increased by around 50 tonnes, from the usual 800 tonnes a day to nearly 850 tonnes a day. Around 400 garbage collection vans have been deployed for this purpose across 31 wards in NMC’s six divisions.
An official from NMC’s solid waste management department said more garbage is generated during Diwali as residents clean their homes. This is the trend every year during festivals,” the official said. The civic body has been carrying out a special cleanliness drive across Nashik for the past week to keep public places, residential areas and busy markets clean during festivals. “People usually start cleaning their homes a few days before Diwali, resulting in a rise in garbage generation. Contractors appointed by the municipal corporation carry out daily door-to-door garbage collection in the city.
NMC has deployed 12 additional garbage vans, two in each of the six divisions. The civic official added that the high volume of garbage will continue until Bhaubeej on Nov 11, which marks the end of Diwali, and garbage generation will return to normal levels thereafter.
