Nagpur: Lawyers will inspect Nagpur’s 464 public wells to verify the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) claim that they have been cleaned, following an order by the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court in a PIL over the deteriorating condition of the city’s wells. The civic body’s water supply department submitted a zone-wise statement claiming that 464 public wells had been cleaned across the city’s 10 zones. During the proceedings, NMC counsel Sudhir Puranik had informed that it had spent ₹1.24 crore on maintenance and improvement of the wells. The court subsequently sought a zone-wise list of the wells claimed to have been cleaned and indicated that the civic body’s assertions needed to be verified on the ground before the next hearing on Sept 15. The statement submitted by the water supply department shows that NMC claims to have cleaned 464 wells against the proposed cleaning of 445 wells. The Gandhibagh zone recorded the biggest increase over the proposed number, with 83 wells claimed to have been cleaned against 74. The corresponding figures were 53 against 51 in Satranjipura, 24 against 21 in Lakadganj, 25 against 22 in Ashinagar and 17 against 15 in Mangalwari.

The HC has now directed that the claim be independently verified through lawyers. The PIL was filed by activist Sandesh Singalkar through counsel Smita Sarode Singalkar concerning the poor condition and maintenance of public wells in the city. Despite the expenditure, the petitioner pointed out that the condition of the wells had not improved as expected. Singalkar has invited lawyers willing to participate in the inspection to contact her by Sunday afternoon. The verification is to be undertaken in accordance with High Court’s directions. In Laxminagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli and Nehru Nagar, the number of wells claimed to have been cleaned matches the proposed figure. Download the TOI App.
Singalkar pointed out that NMC had made a similar claim about the wells’ condition last year.
