NMC earmarks Rs 15 crore for junction improvement plan

Nashik : The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), in order to ease growing traffic congestion and improve road safety, has launched a citywide Junction Improvement Plan (JIP) and earmarked Rs 15 crore under the National Clean Air Programme (N-CAP) for the project. Under the first phase, around 30 to 40 major traffic junctions across the city will be redesigned using scientific traffic-engineering measures. The assessment will also cover traffic growth and vehicle projections for the next 10 years to ensure proposed solutions remain effective in the long term.

Civic officials said a technical consultant has been finalised through the tender process and will soon begin detailed surveys to identify critical intersections requiring intervention. Officials said smart technologies such as CCTV cameras, traffic sensors, adaptive signal systems and countdown timers are also being considered to improve real-time traffic monitoring and management. Officials said the Junction Improvement Plan would provide a long-term roadmap to modernise Nashik’s road network and create safer, more efficient urban mobility infrastructure.

The initiative aims to improve vehicular movement, reduce delays and enhance safety for all road users. The consultant will prepare improvement plans in accordance with the guidelines of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC). A consultant will inspect key Nashik junctions, conduct traffic volume and turning movement surveys, and undertake road safety audits amid worsening congestion and safety concerns. The number of vehicles has risen steadily in recent years, causing bottlenecks and longer travel times at several junctions. Officials attributed the congestion partly to inadequate intersection designs, higher traffic volumes and the lack of modern traffic management systems. As part of the project, the NMC plans to incorporate a range of traffic management and safety measures, including redesigned junction geometries, pedestrian crossings, cycle tracks, improved traffic signals, bus bays, street lighting and parking management solutions. The plan will also focus on eliminating accident-prone black spots through engineering interventions. The proposed designs will emphasise smoother traffic flow through measures such as channelisation, traffic islands, medians and free left-turn lanes wherever feasible. Provision for pedestrian refuge islands, improved visibility at intersections and integrated footpath and cycling infrastructure will also form part of the project. NMC will conduct trial runs at selected junctions using temporary barricades and road markings in coordination with city traffic police before finalising improvements. A traffic assessment will be conducted three months after implementation to evaluate the measures’ effectiveness. Download the TOI App.
