Pune : A 35-year-old Punawale resident was cheated out of Rs 48.9 lakh by fraudsters who promised her handsome returns on investment in the stock market.
The fraud took place between Sept 9 and Oct 20 and the woman lodged a complaint with the Ravet police on Friday. A police officer said on Sept 9, the woman — a private company employee — received a message online from one suspect, who then added her to a group on a messenger application. By Oct 20, the woman transferred Rs 48.88 lakh to multiple bank accounts provided by the suspects, who also told her to download an app to monitor her portfolio.

“The crooks assured her of high returns if she bought shares through them and gave her some online training,” the officer said. “The app showed substantial gains, but she was unable to liquidate her portfolio,” the officer said.
