Pune: A police sub-inspector, reportedly distressed by a severe health condition, allegedly shot himself with his service pistol at his home in Aundh around 3pm on Wednesday.

The deceased officer, Nilesh Bhausaheb Patil (55), was posted with the Vishrantwadi police station, according to Chatushrungi police. He was supposed to appear at the Bombay high court for a hearing on Wednesday but could not travel due to his poor health,” senior inspector Uttam Bhajnawale of Chatushrungi police told TOI.

Police said Patil was suffering from a serious medical condition, which was known only to his family members. “Patil lived with his wife and son in a flat in Aundh. Hearing the gunshot, Patil’s son rushed into the living room and found his father lying on the sofa with blood oozing from his head. Chatushrungi police registered an accidental death report later that night.

Patil had earlier been posted at Khadak, Deccan Gymkhana and other police stations in the city.
