Pune: As many as 76 criminals on bail, according to police records, were detected on 300 AI-enabled CCTV cameras installed by the city police during Ganeshotsav so far.
“This is done to avert incidents of chain snatching, pickpocketing, body offence and other crimes in the city,” Pawar said. A team headed by assistant commissioner of police (IT and Communication), Vivek Pawar, is continuously monitoring the situation on roads using this AI tech. The system enables the police to track wanted or criminal people whose photographs and facial records are already available on its server. Once a match is made, an alert is sent to the local police station, flagging the presence of a person with a criminal record in the area. Police teams then visit the spot and detain the person. They are then interrogated about the reasons and intentions behind their visit to the respective areas. The cameras are equipped with night-vision facilities, enabling the police to monitor movements in the area even at night. Police have stepped up vigilance to ensure the safety of devotees visiting old city areas in large numbers and for better crowd management.
