Researchers have discovered Dicharax tilariensis, a microscopic land snail endemic to the Tilari region of Kolhapur, adding to the northern Western Ghats’ rich biodiversity.
The research paper detailing the discovery was published on Oct 24 in the journal published by the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Kolhapur : Researchers have identified a new species of microscopic land snail in Kolhapur’s Tilari region, with the discovery now formally documented in the international scientific journal ‘Journal of Conchology’. The species, named Dicharax tilariensis, is currently known only from the Tilari region, making it endemic to the area. The study was carried out by researchers Amrut Bhosale, Tejas Thackeray and Akshay Khandekar of the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation. The discovery marks only the second known species of the genus Dicharax endemic to the northern Western Ghats, underlining the biodiversity significance of the region and the importance of studying lesser-known forms of wildlife.
