Garbage spills onto the footpath near Sai Chowk in Balewadi

“PMC cannot keep preaching about Swachh Pune and allow this to continue,” said Peethambaran, pointing to the mounds of garbage bags and trash spread all over the place. He said the garbage has piled up to such an enormous scale that the adjoining footpath is being used for waste segregation, leaving both the footpath and the road dirty and unusable. Balewadi deserves action, not only excuses,” said Peethambaran. “Despite repeated meetings with PMC’s solid waste management team and assurances from representatives of its agencies, such as SWaCH and Siddhivinayak, the problem of rampant dumping and segregation of waste continues to persist in open spaces in Balewadi, leading to health and environmental hazards,” added Kotamkar.

Residents complained that the civic body continues to use the area for waste segregation despite repeated complaints, meetings with PMC officials and site visits by the Balewadi Welfare Federation. The practice allows garbage to pile up on the adjoining footpath and spill onto the road. KN Peethambaran, a resident of Balewadi, spoke about how PMC was using the site and blocking a large stretch of the footpath, causing health-related issues for residents, especially senior citizens and children. Ashish Kotamkar, another resident, pointed out that the Balewadi Welfare Federation has repeatedly taken up the matter with all authorities concerned.
“How long must residents suffer before PMC takes accountability? Who authorised the use of a public footpath in such a way? Where is the accountability for public health, hygiene and pedestrian safety? We demand immediate clearance of the accumulated garbage, restoration of the footpath and relocation of this waste-handling activity to a proper, authorised facility.
