Mumbai: A two-hour ordeal faced by a senior citizen couple outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 2 has renewed focus on autorickshaw refusals, overcharging and indiscipline at key transport hubs across the city. She claimed commuters bound for Marol were quoted fixed fares of about Rs 250. “It was never like this earlier,” said the woman. Only after I protested, did we finally get an auto,” the woman said. Sources said the situation at the T2 autorickshaw stand has become a serious concern, with complaints of refusals, preferential selection of passengers and fixed-fare demands. RTO officials said autorickshaw drivers holding Public Service Vehicle Authorisation badges are legally bound to accept passengers and may refuse only with valid reasons.
“We joined the queue for autorickshaws, but there were two lanes. Passengers waited in one lane, while many autos used the outer lane to pick those travelling to preferred destinations. Auto drivers called for Vasai and Andheri passengers. Even the staff appeared to be asking whether anyone was travelling to those destinations. She further claimed that several auto drivers ignored passengers heading to nearby locations. Some allegedly demanded higher fares, while others preferred long-distance trips. “We had to stand for two hours. Security personnel are often required to intervene, prevent touting, disperse drivers operating outside the queue system and ensure smooth traffic flow in the pickup area. However, enforcement remains a challenge, particularly during peak hours. Sources called for stronger police presence at the stand to curb refusals and overcharging. The incident reflects a wider problem across Mumbai. Activist Godfrey Pimenta of Watchdog Foundation has repeatedly highlighted complaints of refusals, long waits and inflated fares near airports, railway and Metro stations and other transport hubs.
