Thane: A 38-year-old Kalyan resident has been arrested by Hill Line police in Ulhasnagar for allegedly possessing Indian and Pakistani passports obtained using forged documents.
Police said the matter came to light during verification by passport authorities, who detected discrepancies in his travel and identity records.
Sayyed was an Indian citizen and was issued an Indian passport in 2009, according to police. He has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to forgery and use of forged documents, besides Sections 12(1)(a), 12(1)(b) and 12(3) of the Passports Act, 1967, and Section 14(b) of the Foreigners Act, 1946. DCP Zone 4 Sachin Gore said Sayyed was remanded in judicial custody.
Senior inspector Sandeep Shivale said the ATS was conducting a parallel inquiry to ascertain whether his stay in Pakistan was linked to any terror-related or other unlawful activities. He allegedly used the passport to travel to Pakistan, where he stayed for around four to five years to meet relatives. During his stay, he allegedly obtained a Pakistani passport using forged documents. The authorities then alerted Hill Line police. Police arrested Sayyed from his residence last week. Since Sayyed allegedly stayed in Pakistan for several years, police have also informed Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad.
