The accused tanker driver was identified as Sohanlal Kania Meena, 34, a native of Rajasthan.
NAVI MUMBAI: A chemical tanker driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fatally hit a pedestrian while taking a turn on a narrow road at a junction near Barsoli village in the Dhatav MIDC area of Roha taluka in Raigad district on Sunday around 8.15 pm. Constable Ashutosh Mhatre of Roha police said the deceased was identified as Ajay Subhash Sarkar, 29, a Dhatav resident originally from West Bengal. Meena was detained and his medical examination confirmed alcohol consumption. He was later released after being served a notice under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), police said.
The driver allegedly tried to flee, but locals blocked his way and alerted Roha police, who detained him and took him to the police station. Sarkar worked at the canteen of an industrial unit in Dhatav MIDC. But the crowd blocked his way and handed him over to the cops who arrived at the accident spot after receiving information at the police station. An FIR was subsequently registered against him for rash and negligent driving causing death and dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol.
