Kolhapur : The Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) has banned single-use plastic items on its campus in an instruction issued to canteens, messes and departments on Oct 1.
The SUK also issued a notice on Oct 3 to the heads of departments, hostels and the main administrative building that low rainfall this year has decreased water levels in all wells and lakes on the university premises significantly.
An administrative official said that punitive action will be taken against those using plastic, as its use has been banned to keep the university campus clean and eco-friendly. Dr V N Shinde, registrar of SUK, said, “In accordance with the plastic ban, inspections will be conducted by the university administration from time to time. If the use of banned plastic items is found, punitive action will be taken as per govt rules.
The university has instructed that until next year’s rainfall, available water should be used sparingly by reducing current water consumption and preserving water for future use.
