It is among the two Maharashtra districts ranked in top 10 in Performance Grading Index. The district has spent Rs78 crore so far in the 2026-27 fiscal, around 12% of the DPC funds, on primary education. In contrast, Centre spends roughly 2.5% and Maharashtra govt around 13% of their annual budget on education. Satara ZP runs 2,670 primary schools. Around one lakh students study in these institutions having 7,200 teachers. All schools are equipped with CCTV cameras , 80% classrooms are digitised and 85% schools have libraries. Satara has secured a place among top three districts in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) since 2022. In PGI, Maharashtra has two districts in top 10 — Kolhapur and Satara. Arjun Koli, retired headmaster of Karad Nagar Parishad-run school number 3, which has Maharashtra’s highest strength of 2,500 students, said, “The development of physical infrastructure builds confidence among parents to send their kids to public schools.

Satara topped the state, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER). The funds spent on Zilla Parishad (ZP) and municipal council schools in the district worked like a magic wand. The initiative has been such a success that the Satara ZP has added Standard VIII and IX. It has now proposed to add Standard X as well. Yashni Nagarajan, Satara ZP’s chief executive officer (CEO), had presented the Model School initiative before Prime Minister Narendra Modi last December. “We have spent a little more than Rs200 crore in the last three years only on school infrastructure. It boosted the morale of teachers and parents’ confidence to send their kids to school. We have observed a dropout reversal trend. “These efforts have been reflected in performance as well.
