Nagpur: Traffic Police have registered cases against 190 motorists for wrong-side driving during a 16-day crackdown between Aug 25 and Sept 7. Sonegaon registered the highest number of cases at 45, while Kamptee had the fewest, with five. Traffic police had taken 10,217 enforcement actions in 2025, while 8,389 actions were recorded in the first seven months of 2026 alone, already exceeding 82% of the previous year’s total. Officials said this reflects a significant intensification of enforcement this year, with the latest 16-day drive forming part of the broader crackdown. Data from the drive showed enforcement action across 11 traffic zones. Sonegaon recorded the highest number of violations at 45, nearly a quarter of the total cases. Cotton Market followed with 21 cases, while Indora registered 19. MIDC and Lakadganj recorded 18 cases each, followed by Sitabuldi (14), Sakkardara (13), Pardi (12), Sadar (10) and Kalamna (9). The operation was launched by DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar to curb the violation, which police say is a major contributor to road accidents. Kamptee reported the fewest violations at five, followed by Ajni with six, making them the two zones with the least enforcement action.
Officials said many motorists take the wrong side to save time or avoid travelling to the next junction for a legal turn. Officials said FIRs, criminal prosecution and vehicle seizure are being used to deter offenders. Titled “Operation No Wrong Side”, the drive will continue, with Traffic Police warning of strict legal action against habitual offenders across the city.
The seemingly minor shortcut, however, has repeatedly proved fatal on the city’s roads. Download the TOI App.
