Fire officer Kailash Shinde of the Pune Fire Brigade told TOI that locals had already shifted the injured men to the hospital by the time the fire brigade reached the spot.
Irfan Shaikh , a resident, told TOI that construction work on the multi-storey building was underway. “The metal sheets could not sustain the weight of the debris that had accumulated on them and collapsed,” Shaikh said. He said one of the injured men had just stepped out of the pharmacy and was drinking water while sitting on his scooter when the sheets fell on him. “We sent the injured men to a nearby private hospital,” he said.
The shed was erected to prevent debris from hitting people during construction. A pharmacy, a restaurant and a few other shops were already operating on the ground floor of the building. The builder had erected a metal-sheet shed around the building to prevent debris from falling onto the ground. He suffered severe injuries. Another person from a nearby eatery was also injured.
Residents took the injured men to a hospital before the fire brigade reached the spot.
