Excavation of 1 kilometre of the tunnel has been completed as part of the ₹8,056-crore project. Work on Mumbai’s Orange Gate–Marine Drive underground tunnel project is progressing steadily. The development marks progress in the construction of an underground route planned to improve connectivity and reduce travel time across the city.

The project aims to reduce the current road travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive from 22–40 minutes to just 5–7 minutes. Once completed, the underground connection is expected to make journeys along this route significantly faster and more convenient for commuters travelling through South Mumbai (AI image) The project covers approximately 10 kilometres, including 7 kilometres of underground twin tunnels. It is designed to connect the Eastern Freeway directly with the Coastal Road and Marine Drive. This connection is intended to improve travel between important road corridors and make journeys towards South Mumbai faster (AI image)
