Yellow chemical detected in borewells in Datta Nagar not carcinogenic, 50 units shut, argues Mahajan

District guardian minister Girish Mahajan held a meeting at collectorate on Friday

Mahajan said a joint drive involving the district administration, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, MIDC and Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has led to action against 50 industries, including illegal units, for allegedly discharging untreated effluents. On the Goda Aarti dispute between two groups on the banks of Godavari river, Mahajan said a consensus had been reached ahead of President Droupadi Murmu’s visit on Oct 31. Mahajan said reports confirmed water contamination but found no cancer-causing elements.

We are, however, taking strict action against all entities involved in dumping untreated waste into the ground,” he said while speaking after a review meeting at the collectorate. Even legal units with non-functional effluent treatment systems are facing action,” he said. He said NMC was working on a war footing to ensure adequate potable water supply to affected areas. The combined ceremony will be documented for a Guinness World Records entry, he said.

“There was contamination in the water, but claims that it contained carcinogenic substances were unfounded. “There will be zero tolerance for industries polluting groundwater. The minister also warned residents against using sealed borewells after being informed that some people continued to draw water from them. Under the agreed plan, the President will first attend the aarti organised by the Purohit Sangh, followed by a traditional aarti performed by members of the tribal community.

Nashik : District guardian minister Girish Mahajan on Friday said the yellow chemical detected in groundwater from borewells in Datta Nagar, near the Ambad industrial belt, was not carcinogenic, though it had caused skin ailments among residents.
