A total of 700 saplings of 25 native species were planted using Miyawaki afforestation method. Madurai: Madurai corporation has partnered with Young Indians (Yi) Madurai chapter to set up a dense micro-forest at Vellakkal solid waste management facility as part of efforts to expand urban green cover and mitigate rising temperatures. Corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar inaugurated the initiative by planting saplings at the site on Thursday.

Kumar said the project would help restore ecological balance, mitigate urban heat effect and promote sustainable growth. The initiative aims to transform the waste management facility into a dense, self-sustaining pocket forest. He added that the corporation was working with Yi and other local bodies to create similar green spaces across the city. Corporation assistant executive engineer Balamurugan, Yi Madurai chapter chair Vikrant, Yi members and corporation officials attended the plantation drive. Download the TOI App.
