Ramanathapuram : A woman head constable collapsed and died while chasing a 25-year-old man who allegedly assaulted another person in the emergency ward of the Paramakudi govt hospital on Monday.
Police said Kannagi subsequently returned to the emergency ward and went to the dressing room, where she suddenly fainted. Nurses rushed her to doctors, who administered CPR and made efforts to revive her. However, she died despite treatment.
Police arrested the man on Tuesday in connection with the incident. Police said M Kannagi, a woman head constable, was on duty at the police assistance centre in the emergency ward of the hospital around 8pm on Monday when she witnessed a man slap another person. Following an investigation, police arrested the suspect, identified as Karuvayan alias Karuppuraja, of Kumarakurichi in Sivaganga district, on Tuesday morning.
Chief minister C Joseph Vijay offered his condolences and announced Rs30 lakh for the family of the bereaved.
Paramakudi Town police registered a case and launched a search for the man who had fled the hospital.
