Around 500 tonnes of plastic waste was burnt at Arakkapady in Vengola and it took 20 hours for the fire personnel to extinguish the blaze completely.

A DDMA official said the joint director has been directed to complete the fire audit immediately and submit a report. The district panchayat president said special attention should be given to locations where waterlogging occurred in previous years. Kochi : In the wake of the fire at the plastic waste plant in Arakkappady, a district disaster management authority (DDMA) meeting decided to subject MCFs (material collection facilities) and waste collection centres of all local bodies in the district to fire audits, and to take strict action against units operating without licences. The joint director of local self govt has been asked to take the initiative in this regard and coordinate with the fire force. Meanwhile, in view of the weather warning that the northeast monsoon may intensify and the twin cyclonic circulations that have formed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the DDMA directed that sanitation and preventive measures in the district be stepped up. The collector instructed the Kochi corporation secretary to ensure that drains and canals in the city are cleaned and that waste is not allowed to accumulate. The meeting directed the joint director to take necessary steps in areas within local body limits that are prone to waterlogging and landslides. Funds have been sanctioned to the joint director to provide Rs one lakh each to village panchayats for basic facilities and repairs in schools identified for relief camps. The meeting also decided to allocate an additional Rs one lakh for purchasing or hiring safety equipment during emergencies.

The meeting was headed by district collector G Priyanka, who is also the DDMA chairperson, in the presence of district panchayat president K G Radhakrishnan on Friday.
