Madurai: The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme will be expanded across Madurai district from Sept 22 to cover students of Classes VI to VIII in all government and government-aided schools, District Collector Nishant Krishna said. The expansion will cover 574 schools — 400 in rural areas and 174 in urban areas — benefiting 69,730 students. As part of preparations for the rollout, district authorities conducted a trial run at all 574 schools on Sept 11. On the inauguration day on Sept 22, schools will serve a special menu of ven pongal, vegetable sambar and sweet pongal to all beneficiary students, the collector said.
