Buyers return ₹30 ‘fine rice’ in Theni, confront MLA over quality

Madurai: Residents in Theni district returned rice sold under Tamil Nadu government’s new ₹30-a-kg fine-rice scheme on Thursday, alleging that the grain was coarse and resembled rice distributed free through ration shops. Government launched the scheme on October 17 to cushion households against rising rice prices. It promised A-grade fine rice through 250 cooperative and Amudham outlets statewide, with each family eligible to buy up to five kilograms. The initial distribution target was 25,000 tonnes. Officials returned 20 tonnes of the supplied stock, arranged replacements from local mills and ordered a departmental inquiry.
