cash on delivery — Every order came with a catch

Veeramani

Followers pooled Rs 6,000. One purported television order carried a Rs 1.69-lakh price tag.

Neighbours said he had vacated after relentless deliveries. MADURAI: The first time Veeramani asked Instagram for a favour, he got a Kerala holiday. The second time, he got an evacuation plan. This Madurai-based social media influencer, known for his slang and humour, had shared his phone number and sought contributions for a long-cherished trip. He visited Kerala, shared travel reels and, apparently, developed faith in internet generosity. Soon, delivery executives from Amazon and Flipkart began arriving with refrigerators, washing machines, smartphones and televisions. Every order came with a catch: cash on delivery. Veeramani had neither ordered the goods nor money to pay for them. Nor could he furnish the OTPs sought by couriers. When TOI visited his Anupanadi residence, the door was locked. Reels showed him travelling on a bus, though his destination remains unclear. Incoming calls to his publicised number were barred. Neighbours told TOI that Swiggy and Zomato delivery executives also kept arriving with food orders. The pranksters did not stop with appliances. And then, some took it to the next level, sharing screenshots of imaginary orders for JCB excavators and Rs 70crore military tanks.
