Chennai: A 53-year-old man allegedly under the influence of ganja attacked two ambulance staffers and damaged medical equipment worth Rs 10 lakh while being taken to Saidapet Govt Hospital early Monday.
Police said residents of Bharathi Nagar in Taramani informed police around 11.45pm on Sunday about an injured man lying by the roadside. The 108 ambulance arrived at the spot to take him to the hospital. The crew alerted Velachery police, and he was taken to the Saidapet Govt Hospital around 1.30am. The value of the damaged equipment was estimated at Rs 10 lakh.

Police said the ambulance windows and seats, along with medical equipment kept inside it, were damaged. Police identified him as Ramasamy of Tiruvannamalai district, who was residing with his family in Pallavaram. During the journey, Ramasamy attacked ambulance staffer Yuvaraj and tried to strangle him with a stethoscope. When driver Mahesh intervened, Ramasamy attacked him with a sharp object. At the hospital, Ramasamy tried to attack doctors, nurses and police personnel who attempted to restrain him. Police later controlled him. Ramasamy claimed that a gang had forced narcotic substances into his body after he refused to sell ganja. Police are verifying his claim. Ramasamy was later shifted to the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk. Download the TOI App.
