Chennai: A 63-year-old man was arrested for breaking into a house in Muthialpet and stealing 23 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth ₹28 lakh and cash, police said. The stolen jewellery and ₹1.6 lakh in cash were recovered from him. The complainant, Abubacker Siddique, 42, of Malayappan Street, Broadway, works at a tea shop on NSC Bose Road, Parrys Corner. Gold jewellery weighing 23 sovereigns and ₹2.5 lakh in cash kept in the wardrobe were missing. On his complaint, the Muthialpet police arrested Ramesh Agarwal, 63, of MKB Nagar, on Tuesday. Police recovered 23 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹1,60,900 from him.
Police said Agarwal and an accomplice had surveyed the area before breaking into the house. His wife and children had gone to their hometown in Madurai. When he returned in the afternoon, he found the door lock and a wardrobe broken. The accomplice took a share of the stolen property and fled to another state. Agarwal was arrested at Thiru Vi Ka Nagar bus terminus while attempting to travel to his hometown with the remaining valuables. A previous case was also pending against Agarwal with Anti-Vice Squad. He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
On Monday, Siddique locked his house and went to work.
