On April 30, the Supreme Court-appointed high-powered committee conducted the polls to elect 23 members to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The results were declared on July 21. Those elected included former chairman of the council Amalraj and 17 others, including advocates K Balu, R C Paul Kanagaraj, M Velmurugan, G Mohanakrishnan, T Prasanna. These 23 elected members have now elected the chairman, vice-chairman and BCI member from among themselves.

Advocate E Balamurugan was elected vice-chairman, while advocate P S Amalraj has been elected as the member representing Tamil Nadu in the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi. Chennai: Advocate and newly elected member of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, K Kathiravan, was declared elected as chairman of the Bar Council on Tuesday. Kathiravan, Balamurugan and Amalraj have been declared elected unopposed as no other nominations were filed till the deadline which ended at 1pm on Tuesday, according to a statement released by Justice K N Basha (retired) who monitored the election.

A total of 143 advocates from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry contested the election. Polling was conducted at 168 polling stations, 166 in Tamil Nadu and two in Puducherry. The election recorded a voter turnout of 81%.
