Chennai: Teachers and school heads have called for standardised assessments for Classes 3, 5 and 8, better teacher training and a law to protect educational institutions from violence.
The association also sought standardised assessments for Classes 3, 5 and 8 to measure learning outcomes and identify gaps. The association also honoured about 500 school principals and educationists with awards.
We need law for protection for school heads and teachers just like an the one that protects doctors, hospitals, and its,” said M J John Arokia Prabhu, state general secretary of the School Voice Association. Parents must also take responsibility for their children’s education, behaviour and overall development,” the association said. The School Voice Association presented the demands in a memorandum on the challenges facing school principals. Teachers, principals and educationists from schools across the state took part. The association sought a law similar to the Tamil Nadu Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act to protect teachers, principals and school property. “There is violence committed against teachers, sometimes by students themselves. “These classes are where a student undergoes critical academic transitions. A student must be assessed at these points. Other demands included less paperwork for principals and school administrators and a single-window system for EMIS, UDISE and Right to Education processes. The association also sought curriculum modules on digital citizenship, online safety and mobile phone use. “Awareness programmes and life-skills training should be provided to parents to encourage respectful communication with teachers and school management.
