Session sees highest number of visitors

Chennai: The budget session of TN assembly concluded on Tuesday after attracting 32055 visitors, the highest number to have watched the proceedings from the visitors’ gallery, according to Speaker J C D Prabhakar. The session, which began on June 18, had 13 govt Bills and eight govt resolutions passed while more than 12,000 questions were reviewed. Chief minister C Joseph Vijay made 17 departmental announcements under Rule 110, while 165 members spoke for more than 63 hours, Prabhakar said.

He announced full-day live streaming with sign-language interpretation for future sessions.

AIADMK’s Thalavai Sundaram said Prabhakar turned out to be the ‘hero’ of the house. TVK general secretary N Anand said the speaker was guiding them like a ‘father. Turning emotional, Prabhakar said though late chief minister M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa wanted to make him a minister, it never happened. But it was Vijay who gave him a prestigious post of assembly speaker, Prabhakar said.

After DMK MLAs were evicted, the mood in the house turned lighter with many of the TVK MLAs as well as AIADMK members praising Prabhakar for the manner he conducted the session. C Ve Shanmugam thanked the speaker saying he got more opportunities to speak than what he got during AIADMK period.
