City police on Saturday booked a man on charges of posting derogatory remarks against Madurai MP Su Venkatesan on social media.
Police said Sivaprabakaran of Madurai posted a video clip against the MP on social media on Sept 23. SS Colony police registered the case based on a complaint lodged by Ganesan, secretary of the CPM’s Madurai city district committee. The complainant alleged that Sivaprabakaran made remarks intended to create religious disharmony and made derogatory statements concerning Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple.

Police registered a case under sections 196(1)(a) (promoting enmity between groups), 352 (intentional insult provoking breach of peace) and 353(2) (spreading false information or rumours promoting enmity between groups) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
